{"id":3411,"date":"2024-02-29T02:17:45","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T00:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=3411"},"modified":"2024-02-29T02:17:45","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T00:17:45","slug":"report-on-akamas-roadworks-expected-within-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=3411","title":{"rendered":"Report on Akamas roadworks expected , \u2018within days\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/report-on-akamas-roadworks-expected-within-days.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\">A report into construction work on roads in the Akamas <strong>region is expected to be completed \u201cwithin days\u201d<\/strong>, Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The report, which is being written by the ad hoc committee created to look into the works, will be submitted to cabinet \u201cby mid-March at the latest,\u201d she said.She added that she is \u201c<strong>absolutely committed to transparency<\/strong>\u201d on the matter.Construction work on roads in the Akamas region has been \u201ctemporarily halted\u201d since November due to environmental concerns and accusations of construction taking place outside the agreed parameters.The \u201cNational Akamas Forest Plan\u201d to allow construction to take place in some areas of the peninsula was rolled out in September last year.However, construction lasted a mere matter of weeks before <strong>environmental groups cried foul<\/strong>, saying works had been carried out in violation of \u201cprecisely stipulated, non-negotiable conditions attached to the plan\u201d.Soon after, President Nikos Christodoulides said he was \u201cpersonally annoyed\u201d by evidence that construction work had deviated from the agreed plans, adding his voice to the cries for construction works to be halted.Contractor Cyfield then announced all construction works on the road network in the Akamas peninsula would be halted until all issues were settled, while members of <strong>the House environment committee described the government as \u201cpathetic\u201d<\/strong>.Then-Agriculture Minister Petros Xenophontos said works had deviated from the original plan and called for an investigation into how that happened, before days later saying construction works would proceed and would not be suspended under any circumstances.Most recently, two petitions filed regarding the projects were discussed at the European parliament\u2019s petitions committee, with both requesting that <strong>the European parliament take measures \u201cto protect the area\u2019s biodiversity\u201d<\/strong>.Follow the<br \/>\nCyprus Mail  on Google News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A report on the construction work on roads in the Akamas region is expected to be completed soon, with Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou indicating it will be submitted to the cabinet by mid-March at the latest.
