The new amended proposal of the Ministries of Energy and Finance was brought before the Cabinet last Friday<\/p>\n

The debate continues at today's session of the Council of Ministers on the proposal submitted jointly by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Giorgos Papanastasiou and the Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos, in relation to the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Great Sea Interconnector (former EuroAsia Interconnector), which concerns the electricity interconnection Cyprus \u2013 Greece (via Crete) in the first phase and Cyprus \u2013 Israel in the second phase.<\/p>\n
At the session, according to information from KYPE, the new amended proposal of the two Ministries will be discussed, through which the approval of the Council of Ministers is requested for the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Cyprus-Crete electrical interconnection project.<\/p>\n
The Cabinet debate on the proposal began last Friday, February 2.<\/p>\n
The Great Sea Interconnector (formerly EuroAsia) concerns the interconnection, through submarine cables, of the national electricity transmission networks of Cyprus, Israel and Greece (via Crete), with a capacity of 2,000 MW and bi-directional. The implementing body of the project is the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (IEO) of Greece.<\/p>\n
The distance between Cyprus and Israel is 380 km and about 900 km from Cyprus to Crete, while the water depths between Cyprus and Crete are between 3-3.5 km and between Israel and Cyprus 2-2.5 km.<\/p>\n
The company that manufactures the cable, Nexans, has French interests and the cable is manufactured in Norway.<\/p>\n
