In a statement, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it fully supports the "declaration of the 'yepex' of the 'tdvk' regarding the decision numbered 2723 (2024) on the extension by one year of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) which based on the island of Cyprus, which was approved by the United Nations Security Council on January 30, 2024."<\/p>\n
As reported, contrary to the established practices of the United Nations, while the mandate of the Peacekeeping Force was extended, this time it did not receive the approval of the Turkish Cypriot side either.<\/p>\n
"We draw attention once again that UNFICYP can continue its activities in the territory of the 'tdvk' thanks to the goodwill of the 'tdvk' authorities. We underline the need for a legal basis for the continuation of these activities and we emphasize our full support for the measures that the 'tdvk' will take in this direction", the statement of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states.<\/p>\n
The Turkish Foreign Ministry also maintains that the UN Security Council has turned a blind eye to numerous violations of the dead zone by the Greek Cypriot side over the years.<\/p>\n
He notes that his attempt to unjustly prevent the construction of the Pyla road, which is a humanitarian project, on August 18, 2023, revealed once again that he did not demonstrate the impartiality expected of peacekeeping missions.<\/p>\n
It is regrettable that, in this latest decision, the United Nations Security Council refers to the press release it issued on August 21 regarding the incident in question, which is far from reality, the statement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry noted, adding that the completion of the Pyla road could be an effective step towards restoring the eroded trust of the Turkish Cypriots towards UNFICYP and could help reduce tensions.<\/p>\n
"On the other hand, we are deeply disappointed that, while the decision to extend the mandate of the UN Security Council refers to outdated and exhausted models in the context of a possible solution, the two-state vision proposed by the 'president' of the ' Mr. Tatar was not mentioned," it is noted.<\/p>\n
"We stress that this approach is far from fair and constructive, at a time when a personal envoy has just been appointed to investigate whether there is common ground between the two sides on the island," it says.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the Turkish Foreign Ministry calls on the United Nations Security Council to accept the fact that a just, lasting and sustainable solution in Cyprus can only be achieved based on the realities and to recognize the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, their sovereign equality and equality international status.<\/p>\n
