"In order to win, the other side does not always have to lose," the Federation says in today's announcement, one day after the official announcement of the ENA Theater to suspend operations until further notice<\/p>\n

With today's announcement, the Federation of Theater Organizations announces that six of the nine productions of the organizations that make up the Federation will not take place this semester, as it was not possible to find a way to raise them with the amount proposed by the "Thymeli" plan A semester, as well as no communication with the Guilds was possible.<\/p>\n

In their announcement, they state that they had expressed their concerns about the poor performance of the first half of this year since the plan was first presented and the conditions that would be set in the "Thymeli" plan for the first half of 2024, which finally was implemented.<\/p>\n

Although they had stated that they would not submit their applications, they finally did so after a request from the people of the Deputy Ministry. Keeping their reservations, however, they continued the efforts even after the results were announced.<\/p>\n

It is noted that, for the specific results, an uproar was caused in the theater scene of the island and many demanded the resignation of the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasilikis Kassianidou, among them the Federation of Theater Organizations of Cyprus. Reactions which brought many meetings, the proportional increase of the amount proposed to the productions with an additional fund of 170 thousand euros and the increase of the fund of the operating expenses of the theater roofs up to 40 thousand euros.<\/p>\n

Something that the Federation itself notes today: "The Deputy Ministry responded by distributing an additional fund of 170,000 euros to the approved productions and at the same time upgraded the Plan for Partial Coverage of Operating Expenses up to 40,000 euros."<\/p>\n

A fund which, however, as they say, "he used, as an alibi, not to proceed with important and substantial changes", as he received the "positive acceptance of the Plan from various groups and organizations that rushed to 'welcome' it, without see the real dangers it hid for everyone without exception."<\/p>\n

After these moves by the Deputy Ministry, the Federation tried to make additional moves with the theater community, and specifically with the Actors' Unions, on January 23 in order to find a solution for the criterion set for the three-month collective agreements, which provides for the " Thimeli" of this semester. However, there was no response from them, with the result that the final date, January 26, 2024, for accepting the sponsorship finds six productions of the Federation's bodies outside of "Thymel".<\/p>\n

It is noted that, according to them, the Federation had already started consultations from the summer of 2022 with the Actors Guilds for the modernization of the contract and its observance. "However, the actors' unions strongly insisted on the side of the Deputy Ministry and the reinstatement of the signed collective agreement as a condition for the grant of a theater organization, which should also be noted that the THOK for eight years had set this condition outside of the grant plan.<\/p>\n

"The Federation never refused to sign the collective agreement, it only asked for harmonization with today's economic conditions. However, after the 'Thymeli' A' plan for semester 2024 was drawn up and announced, the Deputy Ministry, without informing us, arbitrarily added to an already posted plan, and after many applications had been submitted, the condition of compliance with the financial terms of the 2012 collective agreement.<\/p>\n

"A year in which most of the groups that are currently active and requesting sponsorship had not yet been created, while furthermore the sponsorships for at least the oldest theaters were stable, annual and of course much higher," they conclude. Let's say, however, that this semester's plan stipulates that each group and theater must have completed two years of operation, and that is why the "POH" theater group and "A Vendre" were excluded.<\/p>\n

It is also very important to mention that Theater ENA, a member of the Federation, announced yesterday, Monday, January 29, 2024, that it is closing its performances until further notice, as it did not accept the sponsorship because, as they stated: "The math doesn't work out."<\/p>\n

It is with great sadness that the Federation of Theater Organizations of Cyprus makes today 30\/1\/2024 the following announcement.<\/p>\n

From the beginning of the announcement of the THIMELI Plan 2024 \u2013 1st Semester, our members had expressed their concerns about the terms of the Plan, but also the risk that the productions would not take place if the Plan proceeded as it had been prepared. A Plan that with special "study" was brought before us by the Deputy Ministry of Culture. Despite our concerns about the non-functionality of the Plan and after correspondence with the Deputy Ministry and meetings both with the Deputy Ministry and with all the authorities, where we emphasized our disagreements about the Plan, we decided to make the applications, after a request and the people of the Deputy Ministry, but maintaining our reservations and continuing the efforts, even after the announcement of the results, to find some solution, even a temporary one, in order to carry out a significant number of productions.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Ministry responded by distributing an additional fund of 170,000 euros to the approved productions and at the same time upgraded the Plan for Partial Coverage of Operating Expenses up to 40,000 euros. However, he used, as an alibi, not to proceed with important and essential changes, the positive acceptance of the Plan by various groups and organizations that rushed to 'welcome' it, without seeing the real dangers it hid for everyone without exception.<\/p>\n

For the record, we must mention that the Federation had already started consultations from the summer of 2022 with the Actors Guilds to modernize the contract and observe it, but these were stopped when the "Thymeli" Plan was taken over by the Deputy Ministry, so that let us all see the new Plan (which he would draw up) and sign a contract on terms which might meet it. As part of our effort to find some invitations with the Trade Unions that would apply only for the first half of 2024 in order to carry out the approved productions and not leave a large number of actors and performers unemployed from jobs they relied on, we sent on Tuesday 23\/01\/2024 our proposals to the Actors Guilds and at the same time we proposed to proceed to meetings to find a definitive solution and essentially to sign a Contract with correct professional terms. The Guilds, until Friday January 26, 2024 which was the deadline for accepting or not the sponsorships, unfortunately did not even respond either positively or negatively.<\/p>\n

In the end, as a result of all our initiatives and efforts, out of a total of 9 approved productions of the members of the Federation of Theater Organizations of Cyprus, 6 could not be realized based on the terms of the Plan and the amounts allocated.<\/p>\n

With this data, everyone can draw their own conclusions about the situation that has been created."<\/p>\n
