Big business groups are\u00a0springing into action,\u00a0and the downtown community is\u00a0already watching key lawmakers\u2019 every move.<br \/>\n<strong>It all spells business for Washington\u2019s influence industry.\u00a0<\/strong>Here\u2019s a flavor of the lobbying registrations filed so far this year to give a sense of the intense interest already in the 2025 tax debate:<\/p>\n<table class=\"highlight-arrow-indent-container\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow\">\u2192<\/td>\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow-text-content\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark>A handful of hires have directly cited the 2025 debate. Synopsys listed \u201cpreparation for the 2025 tax debate and R&amp;D tax amortization\u201d among issues in\u00a0its Brownstein hire.\u00a0Boston Scientific\u00a0hired\u00a0Hollier &amp; Associates for issues including \u201creauthorization of TCJA\u201d \u2013 a.k.a. the 2017 Trump tax cut law \u2013 and the American Property Owners Alliance\u00a0brought on\u00a0brand-new firm Phronesis DC for \u201cTCJA expiration.\u201d Blackstone\u2019s recent\u00a0hire\u00a0of Hogan Policy Advisors lists \u201ctax reform\u201d among issues.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"highlight-arrow-indent-container\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow\">\u2192<\/td>\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow-text-content\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark>Then there are the companies bringing on lobbying power from the Trump world. Take the Business Roundtable\u2019s\u00a0hire\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>Tim Pataki,<\/strong>\u00a0a Trump legislative affairs staffer now at CGCN, to work on \u201cbusiness tax issues, including the corporate tax rate.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"highlight-arrow-indent-container\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow\">\u2192<\/td>\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow-text-content\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark>Plenty more hires list corporate taxes as a lobbying issue. That\u2019s always a big one, of course, but companies are hyper-aware that if Democrats win any power in November, the\u00a0<strong>21%<\/strong>\u00a0income tax rate is in jeopardy. Corporate tax issues are cited in registrations like Marathon Petroleum\u2019s\u00a0hire\u00a0of FTI Government Affairs and Target\u2019s\u00a0hire\u00a0of Stewart Strategies and Solutions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"highlight-arrow-indent-container\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow\">\u2192<\/td>\n<td class=\"highlight-arrow-text-content\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark>Unsurprisingly, there\u2019s no shortage of hires that mention reviving a bigger tax break for businesses\u2019 research and development spending. Plus, the National Beer Wholesalers Association\u00a0brought on\u00a0Ingram Group and cited permanence for the\u00a0<strong>20%\u00a0<\/strong>deduction for pass-through businesses, which is among the Trump tax cut provisions expiring next year.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span><strong>Beyond K Street:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Lawmakers are getting ready for the tax tussle too. House Ways and Means Committee Republicans set up \u201ctax teams,\u201d and panel members are having meetings with guest speakers,\u00a0as we scooped.\u00a0Senate Finance Committee Republicans have\u00a0six working groups\u00a0set up.<br \/>\n<strong>Finance panel Democrats<\/strong>\u00a0are set for their own meeting today to launch their talks on 2025,\u00a0which we scooped here.<br \/>\n<strong>And then<\/strong>\u00a0there\u2019s the lawmakers angling to flex their muscles ahead of next year\u2019s showdown. That list ranges from Sen.\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Warren<\/strong>\u00a0(D-Mass.), who\u00a0laid down a marker\u00a0with her tax speech this week, to GOP opponents of the cap on deducting state and local taxes, who are\u00a0thinking about how to battle their colleagues\u00a0on the $10,000 limit.<br \/>\n<strong>It\u2019s going to be<\/strong>\u00a0a long, winding road to whatever happens with the expiring Trump tax cuts.
