As Germany and Europe gear up for two significant political, social, and sporting events, the German Ambassador to Cyprus, Anke Schlimm, shared her insights in an interview with Phileleftheros.
\nWith the European Parliament elections taking place this week and the highly anticipated EURO 2024 football tournament kicking off in Germany in mid-June, the conversation touched on topics of interest to all European citizens.
\nRegarding the European Parliament elections, Ambassador Schlimm expressed concern about the potential rise of right-wing populist and far-right parties \u201cthat are calling for the dismantling of European integration and want to divide the EU.\u201d
\nOn the Cyprus issue, the German diplomat reiterated her country\u2019s support for a solution based on UN resolutions. She also sent a message to both sides on the island: \u201cGiven the current deadlock in the Cyprus issue, it will need the courage and willingness of all parties involved to restart the talks.\u201d
\nShe added that Germany stands ready to contribute towards this goal.
\nTwo important events for Europe are coming up. First the European elections and immediately afterwards Euro 2024. The importance for Germany to host this year\u2019s Euro and\u2026 are you thinking about something other than winning the cup?<\/strong>
\nWe are excited to host UEFA EURO 2024 this summer in Germany, under the motto \u201cHome Game for Europe\u201d. These European Football Championships are set to be a great football festival. We want this tournament to be a symbol of cohesion in Europe \u2013 despite all the crises of our time. Germany is world-famous as a football location. The UEFA EURO 2024 will be broadcast far beyond Europe. CYBC will be showing all the matches in Cyprus and there will be a lot of public viewing events all over the island.
\nAm I thinking about anything other than winning the trophy? Well, of course, I would like to host a viewing of the final match and cheer our team \u2013 but to be honest, it is much more important to me, that UEFA EURO 2024 brings people together, in Germany, in Europe, here in Cyprus, worldwide. The matches will contribute to that.
\nAnd I would like to stress that we aim to create sustainable and lasting added value for Germany and Europe beyond the games. That is why UEFA EURO 2024 will be as environmentally friendly as possible: no new stadium construction, affordable national and international train tickets, and free use of public transport with a stadium ticket. With this tournament, we also want to set an example for diversity and inclusion in both professional and amateur sports. With a diverse accompanying programme, we are reaching people from different walks of life and backgrounds to make UEFA EURO 2024 a tournament for all. And there will be an extensive volunteer program with 16.000 people \u2013 with young people from Germany and Europe.
\nIn football terms many people may be happy with a strong Germany at the top of Europe, I don\u2019t know if the same is true in terms of politics with a Germany at the top of the European Union. I believe that some people don\u2019t like to see Germany stepping up and leading the EU.<\/strong>
\nFor me, Europe is the best place on Earth. Europe is a place rich in history and future, in influences and impulses, nature, culture, economy, science and social achievement. Peaceful, constitutional, democratic. Am I talking about a utopia? No, this is our free Europe \u2013 and so real that we thought we could take it all for granted.
\nBecause after 1945, we were fortunate enough to experience how this special European togetherness gradually unfolded after the devastations of war and division in the world. We Germans must never forget that especially we, who brought war and destruction to so many people, were thus able to find the path to peace and friendship. The generations before us created a European Union of freedom \u2013 for living, working and doing business. Our generation now faces the task of defending and strengthening this place of peace, freedom and diversity project that is Europe \u2013 against the forces of aggression, lack of freedom and intolerance. Putin\u00b4s war of aggression against Ukraine is challenging us.
\nAs the European Union, we are defending our values and our security together with friends and allies. What kind of Germany, what kind of EU do we want for the future? Germany will campaign in favour of making our Europe and our EU stronger, not weaker. Together, we want to make the best place in the world even better.
\nWhat do you think is the importance of this year\u2019s European elections both in Germany and in Europe in general?<\/strong>
\nFrom 6 to 9 June, around 350 million EU citizens will be called to vote for the 2024-2029 legislative period of the European Parliament. By participating in the European elections, citizens exercise their democratic rights to shape the future of the EU. For Germany, it is important to promote and strengthen European democracy.
\nWe are concerned that, according to the latest polls, there could be an increase in seats for right-wing populist and far-right parties that are calling for the dismantling of European integration and want to divide the EU. We believe that stable, democratic majorities are needed to advance important future issues for Germany such as climate protection, competitiveness, trade, migration, the preservation of our prosperity and, last but not least, defence and security.
\nWill wider developments such as the war in Ukraine and Gaza affect these elections?<\/strong>
\nPutin\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine is challenging us. As the European Union, we stand by a country that for more than two years has made the greatest sacrifices for a future in freedom and democracy \u2013 and which is now itself taking big strides towards EU accession.
\nThe continuing war in the Middle East underlines the value of peace. It also shows that Cyprus, a small EU member state, can make a significant difference and contribution. When Cyprus opened a humanitarian sea corridor to Gaza with the Amalthea initiative in March, it showed that it could use its geographical position as a bridge between continents to strengthen Europe.
\nWe all know how terrible the situation in Gaza is. This has led the International Court of Justice once again to take interim measures to bring about a humanitarian ceasefire. For this humanitarian ceasefire, we Europeans as well as the German Government have been campaigning for more than six months, to put an end to the suffering of the hostages who are still being held captive, to put an end to the suffering of the people in Gaza.
\nThe war in Ukraine and the situation in Gaza show how dramatic the situation is in different parts of the world. But it also shows how important it is for us as Europeans to act together. Europe is strong when Europe stands together.
\nIt is 20 years since the 2004 enlargement of the EU with the accession of 10 new members. What does this enlargement teach us?<\/strong>
\nOn 1 May 2024, we have been celebrating the 20th<\/sup> anniversary of Cyprus \u2018accession to the EU. Since around 75 million people from Central and Eastern European countries plus Malta and Cyprus were finally able to join the EU 20 years ago Europe has become more diverse, larger and stronger. Today, we have every reason to improve our Europe. The enlarged EU must function even better in future and speak with one voice in foreign policy in order to remain strong and capable of acting \u2013 as a bulwark against lack of freedom and as a shaping power in the world.
\nWe want the EU to take its security into its own hands, both within the framework of the transatlantic alliance and with each other, and defend our way of life. People in the EU want to live freely and securely in open, diverse societies. To achieve this, we must be more resilient and also use military means to guarantee Europe\u00b4s security with our partners.
\nGermany\u2019s proposals for changes in the way the EU makes its decisions are met with negative comments and reactions among the other members of the Union. Our view?<\/strong>
\nThe European Union stands for freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Just like 20 years ago, once again today millions of Europeans see an opportunity and a promise in becoming EU citizens. An entire generation sits in the EU\u00b4s waiting room, as in the countries of the Western Balkan. We must not pass up the opportunity to make our Union bigger and stronger. However, in order for the accession of further countries to the Union to be successful, we must ensure that the EU remains capable of taking action \u2013 we must reform it.
\nIn Germany\u00b4s mind, this includes reducing the scope for vetoes in the European Council. We must remain capable of action also in a future Union potentially numbering over 35 members. This includes reaching decisions more often with a large majority as opposed to achieving unanimity. Even if this means that Germany \u2013 like any other member state \u2013 can also be outvoted. We must address enlargement and reform with determination.
\nCyprus is investing heavily in EU assistance on the Cyprus problem. In what ways can Germany give a helping hand to this effort to move forward?<\/strong>
\nThe division of Cyprus remains an open wound in the heart of Europe. Germany remains fully committed to EU solidarity with Cyprus and a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, i.e. a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality. In February German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier paid an official visit to Cyprus on the invitation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides and confirmed German support for the solution of the Cyprus issue based on the relevant UN resolutions. Given the current deadlock in the Cyprus issue, it will need the courage and willingness of all parties involved to restart the talks. The appointment of Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General is critical.
\nGermany stands ready to help and contribute to facilitating this process. And we are convinced that confidence-building between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities is important. Therefore I pay special and continuous attention to the creation of contact areas, facilitating for example encounters of students and teachers from both sides of the divide within the framework of the \u201cImagine\u201d project or between companies and business associations of both communities.European elections.
