{"id":14013,"date":"2024-06-01T17:01:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T14:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=14013"},"modified":"2024-06-01T17:01:17","modified_gmt":"2024-06-01T14:01:17","slug":"south-africa-election-set-to-end-three-decades-of-anc-dominance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=14013","title":{"rendered":"South, \u00a0Africa\u00a0election set to end three decades of ANC dominance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/south-africa-election-set-to-end-three-decades-of-anc-dominance.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>South\u00a0Africa\u00a0was set to end three decades of dominance by the party that freed it from apartheid on Saturday, as voters angry at joblessness, inequality and power shortages slashed the\u00a0African National Congress\u2019s (ANC) share of the vote to 40%.A dramatically weakened mandate for the legacy party of Nelson Mandela, down from the 57.5% it got in the previous 2019 parliamentary election, means the ANC must share power with a rival in order to keep it \u2013\u00a0an unprecedented prospect.<\/p>\n<p>Vote tallying from Wednesday\u2019s pollwas entering\u00a0the final stages\u00a0on Saturday morning,\u00a0with results in from 98% of polling stations giving the ANC 40.15%.<\/p>\n<p>The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), had 21.71% and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), a new party led by former president Jacob Zuma, managed to grab 14.76%.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has won every previous national election\u00a0by a landslide\u00a0since the historic 1994 vote that ended white minority rule, but over the last decade its support has\u00a0dwindled as the\u00a0economy stagnated, unemployment rose and roads and power stations crumbled.<\/p>\n<p>MK\u2019s strong performance, especially in Zuma\u2019s home province of KwaZulu-Natal, is one of the main reasons\u00a0the ANC failed to secure a majority and will now have to\u00a0strike a coalition deal or another form of agreement with one or more smaller parties.<\/p>\n<p>Political parties\u2019 share of the vote determine\u00a0their\u00a0seats in the National Assembly, which elects the\u00a0nation\u2019s\u00a0president.\u00a0Investors in\u00a0Africa\u2019s most industrialised economy will hope the uncertain picture can quickly become clear.<\/p>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa\u00a0can in theory still keep his job, as the former liberation movement\u00a0was on course to get about twice as many votes as the next party.But he will be\u00a0badly weakenedand could\u00a0face calls to quit\u00a0both from\u00a0opposition parties and critics in the deeply-divided ANC.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, however, a top ANC official\u00a0backed him\u00a0to stay on as party leader, and analysts say he has\u00a0no obvious successor.<\/p>\n<p>A deal to keep the ANC in the presidency could involve opposition backing in exchange either for cabinet posts or for more control of parliament, perhaps even the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The election commission has pencilled in a\u00a0final results\u00a0announcement for Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), saw a decrease in its share of the vote to 40% in the recent election, down from 57.5% in the previous election.
