This pragmatic approach was evident both during the meetings and in their outcomes.
During the joint meeting of the Cypriot and Qatari delegations, President Nikos Christodoulides and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani were unequivocal about their intentions, emphasising their desire for specific references and tangible results rather than vague discussions. It was also agreed to establish a working committee, with the work reviewed by the two leaders every six months.
The Emir of Qatar came well-prepared and ready for business, highlighting his interest in strategic collaborations. He conveyed their interest in participating in long-term projects, particularly in the energy and port sectors.
According to Phileleftheros, Qatar’s investment interests span four main sectors:

Energy

Ports

Financial sector

Technology

Regarding the energy sector, apart from participating in the exploitation of natural gas in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, Qatar also expressed interest in constructing and managing infrastructure for photovoltaic systems and energy storage.
In the port sector, the Emir’s visit comes at a pivotal moment following the recent setback with the Larnaca port project. The Emir indicated Qatar’s interest in participating in a future tender for the development of Larnaca port.
Additionally, Qatar showed interest in the banking sector and technology startups.
The political issues on the agenda included the Cyprus problem and the situation in the region, with a focus on the war in Gaza. Both leaders expressed deep concern about the situation in the Palestinian enclave. They also discussed the humanitarian maritime corridor for delivering aid from Larnaca to Gaza, with the Emir playing a crucial role in financing and politically supporting the “Amalthea” initiative.
The Emirate also values the potential role of the Republic of Cyprus within the European Union regarding the Gulf countries.
In his welcome address, President Christodoulides told Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, “You can consider Cyprus, as an EU member state, as your Ambassador in Brussels, and I look forward to our consultations to further strengthen our relations.”
The President noted the sincere political will of the Republic of Cyprus to work with Qatar in the fields of economy, investments, and tourism, adding, “We can learn a lot from your successful story, and I want to commend your role regarding the developments in Qatar.”
The Emir of Qatar thanked the President for the invitation to visit Cyprus and said, among other things, that “we indeed have excellent relations, which have great prospects, especially in the fields of economy and investments.”
He referred to the private dinner on Monday evening, where they had the opportunity to discuss various issues. The Emir then expressed concern about the developments in the Gaza war, particularly in Rafah, and called for a ceasefire, highlighting Qatar’s efforts in securing the release of hostages.
President Christodoulides, in a toast at a lunch hosted in honour of Sheikh Al Thani following the conclusion of the talks between the two countries’ delegations, emphasised that the Emir of Qatar’s visit marks a strategic step towards further developing and expanding the strong bilateral ties.
“Cyprus and Qatar are geographically connected and part of the same neighbourhood. We are both advocates of diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation, and we respond to the challenges in our region by striving to promote stability, peace, and security,” he said, addressing the Emir.
He expressed his conviction that “today, we are starting to write the next chapter in the promising relations between Qatar and Cyprus for the benefit of our countries, our peoples, and our region.”
Read more:

investment interests. concrete projects, strategic collaborations, energy sector

The Emir of Qatar’s visit to the Presidential Palace focused on discussing concrete projects rather than indulging in rhetoric.
