{"id":13464,"date":"2024-05-28T18:01:34","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T15:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=13464"},"modified":"2024-05-28T18:01:34","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T15:01:34","slug":"jury-in-trump-trial-to-hear-closing-arguments-before-deliberations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=13464","title":{"rendered":"Jury in, \u00a0Trump trial to hear closing arguments before deliberations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/jury-in-trump-trial-to-hear-closing-arguments-before-deliberations.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0New York prosecutors and\u00a0Donald\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0lawyers make their closing arguments at his hush money trial on Tuesday in a final bid to influence the 12 jurors who decide whether he will become the first U.S. president past or present convicted of a crime.After six weeks of trial, prosecutors will argue on Tuesday that\u00a0Trump, 77,\u00a0illegally falsified business documents\u00a0to cover up evidence of a payment that bought the silence of porn star\u00a0Stormy Daniels\u00a0before the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s defense team will try to convince jurors he is not guilty \u201cbeyond a reasonable doubt,\u201d the standard required by U.S. law.\u00a0Trump\u00a0denies Daniels\u2019 allegation of a sexual encounter in 2006 when he was married to his current wife Melania.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s legal team called two witnesses of their own, and the former president himself did not testify.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they have tried to raise doubts about the credibility of prosecution witnesses, most notably\u00a0Michael Cohen, who testified that as\u00a0Trump\u2019s fixer he handled the payment to Daniels and that\u00a0Trump\u00a0approved the cover-up.<\/p>\n<p>During cross-examination,\u00a0Trump\u2019s lawyers got Cohen to discuss his felony convictions and imprisonment, his history of lying and his lingering animosity for his former boss. Cohen also admitted to stealing from\u00a0Trump\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>If found guilty,\u00a0Trump\u00a0faces up to four years in prison, although imprisonment is unlikely for a first-time felon convicted of such a crime.<\/p>\n<p>A conviction will not prevent\u00a0Trump\u00a0from trying to take back the White House from\u00a0Democratic President Joe Biden\u00a0as the Republican candidate in the\u00a0Nov. 5 election, and it would not prevent him from taking office if he won. Opinion polls show the two candidates locked in a tight race.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, normally a misdemeanor under New York law.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s office elevated those charges to felonies, saying\u00a0Trump\u00a0falsified those records to disguise what amounted to an illegal campaign contribution: the payment that bought Daniels\u2019 silence about the alleged 2006 sexual encounter at a time when\u00a0Trump\u00a0was already facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0has pleaded not guilty and denies wrongdoing. His lawyers have implied that the $130,000 payment for Daniels\u2019 silence was intended to spare\u00a0Trump\u2019s family from embarrassment, not to protect his White House bid. Prosecutors will cite testimony to argue otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0faces three other criminal prosecutions as well, but none is likely to go to trial before the election.<\/p>\n<p>Separate cases in Washington and Georgia accuse him of illegally trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat, while another case in Florida charges him with mishandling classified information after he left office in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0has pleaded not guilty in all of the cases and says they are an effort by Biden\u2019s Democratic allies to hobble his presidential
