Cypriot donkeys are being \u201cused as proxies\u201d by news media in Turkey <\/strong>to encourage the country\u2019s public to come around to the idea of euthanising stray dogs, Karpasia environmental protection and social activity association chairman Firat Borak said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Borak was referring to a report in Tuesday\u2019s edition of Turkish newspaper Sozcu which bore the headline \u201clet\u2019s put the donkeys to sleep\u201d.<\/p>\n

The article led on the issue of the debate regarding the potential euthanasia of stray animals in Turkey, before saying a \u201csimilar\u201d situation has developed in Cyprus which has \u201calmost divided the country in two<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

It quoted Galinoporni mukhtar Halil Yesilbulut, who said every farmer in his village has seen \u201c20,000 or 30,000 square metres of barley and wheat destroyed\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe are tired of chasing donkeys every day,\u201d Ayios Symeon mukhtar Rezvan Inlen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number of wild donkeys has increased a lot. The authorities are treating us like donkeys.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Borak was keen to point out that neither mukhtar called for donkeys to be euthanised<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome circles in Turkey want to push public opinion in a certain direction so they can euthanise stray dogs. Donkeys in the Karpas are being used as proxies to cover these people\u2019s sins and crimes against humanity,\u201d he told news website Kibris Postasi.<\/p>\n

He said that while the population of donkeys has increased and that roaming donkeys have been known to damage property and eat crops, other measures are taken to control them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe aim here is to take measures to prevent the excessive proliferation of donkeys and to protect the donkeys,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He was also keen to stress that donkeys are \u201cof great economic benefit\u201d to the Karpasia region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonkeys must be protected. The problem can be prevented if the donkeys are placed in a fenced area, taking into account expert opinions, and preventing overpopulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, the north drew up a \u201cKarpasia donkeys management plan cooperation protocol\u201d in August last year with the aim of better managing the peninsula\u2019s free roaming donkeys.<\/p>\n

The protocol was signed by the north\u2019s \u2018tourism minister\u2019 Fikri Ataoglu, Rizokarpaso and Yialousa mayor Hamit Bakirci, and Tashkent nature park representative Kemal Basat.<\/p>\n

Basat told the Cyprus Mail at the time the protocol is a \u201cwin-win-win\u201d<\/strong> and that it provided for a ten-year implementation of plans to control and safeguard the region\u2019s donkeys.<\/p>\n

He said the first year will see the scientific committee created and various workshops held to gather ideas from professionals and residents.<\/p>\n

At the end of the first year \u2013 this coming August \u2013 a \u201cdonkey management plan\u201d will be devised and completed<\/strong>.
