There have been 14 fatal collisions resulting in 17 deaths this year, compared to 12 collisions and 12 deaths last year.<br \/>\nA notable shift is that most fatalities are occurring within urban areas, unlike the European trend where motorways pose a higher risk. Authorities attribute this to the continued practice of using mobile phones while driving.<br \/>\n\u201cCareless and inattentive driving, mainly due to mobile phone use,\u201d is the primary cause of this year\u2019s fatalities, according to Traffic Officer Charis Evripidou. He emphasised that despite widespread camera enforcement, drivers persist in this dangerous habit.<br \/>\nHowever, there are some positive signs. Alcohol-related deaths are down, and drivers generally show more caution in cities due to the camera system. Complaints about speeding and inattention are the main issues within urban areas.<br \/>\nPedestrians and foreign nationals are disproportionately affected by the rise in accidents.<br \/>\nLimassol has the highest number of fatalities (6) this year, followed by Nicosia (6).
