{"id":12641,"date":"2024-05-21T20:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T17:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=12641"},"modified":"2024-05-21T20:00:45","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T17:00:45","slug":"mexico-s-howler-monkeys-dropping-dead-as-heat-toll-mounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=12641","title":{"rendered":"Mexico, \u2019s howler monkeys dropping dead as heat toll mounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/mexico-s-howler-monkeys-dropping-dead-as-heat-toll-mounts.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>By Luis Manuel Lopez and Raul Cortes<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1465752072\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1951610264\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-8763154600759-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Threatened howler monkeys have been dropping dead from trees in Mexico\u2019s southeastern tropical forests in recent weeks amid a nationwide drought and heat waves that have sent temperatures soaring across much of the country.<br \/>\nIn the state of Tabasco, where temperatures are forecast this week to surpass 45C, local media have reported up to 85 deaths, while local authorities have confirmed the trend without providing a death toll.<br \/>\nIn a statement over the weekend, Tabasco\u2019s Civil Protection agency attributed the deaths to dehydration.<br \/>\nA source from the agency told Reuters on Monday that monkeys have been confirmed dead in three municipalities of the state.<br \/>\nIn a forest outside Camalcalco, Tabasco, volunteers collected the corpses of mantled howler monkeys (alouatta palliata) that died from high temperatures, before placing buckets of water and fruit to try to stave off more deaths.<br \/>\nThe mantled howler monkey is classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is because the heat is so strong. I\u2019ve been visiting the states for a long time and I have never felt it as much as now,\u201d Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who hails from Tabasco, said on Monday when asked about the monkey deaths.<br \/>\n\u201cSo, yes, we have to care for the animals and yes we are going to do it,\u201d he said in his regular news conference.<br \/>\nLater on Monday, Mexico\u2019s\u00a0environment\u00a0ministry said in a statement that it was coordinating efforts to address the monkeys\u2019 deaths, which it attributed to several possible reasons, including \u201cheat stroke, dehydration, malnutrition or the spraying of crops with toxic agro-chemicals.\u201d<br \/>\nMexico is also home to the Yucatan howler monkey, which because of deforestation is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List.<br \/>\nMexico\u2019s health ministry reported a preliminary count of 26 people who have died from heat-related causes between the start of Mexico\u2019s
