{"id":12073,"date":"2024-05-16T18:00:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T15:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=12073"},"modified":"2024-05-16T18:00:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T15:00:10","slug":"govt-priority-undoubtedly-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=12073","title":{"rendered":"Govt priority , \u2018undoubtedly\u2019 mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/govt-priority-undoubtedly-mental-health.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The government\u2019s current priority is \u201cundoubtedly\u201d mental health<\/strong>, Health Minister Michael Damianos said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1707801641\">\n<div id=\"cypru-748127794\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6200315966655-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking at the Cyprus Healthcare Conference, he pointed out that according to estimates published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in 2019, 17.2 per cent of people in Cyprus \u2013 around one in six \u2013 have experienced some form of mental health problem.<br \/>\nFor this reason, he said, his ministry has prepared a national strategy for actions pertaining to \u201cdestigmatisation, prevention, treatment, and reintegration\u201d for people suffering from mental health problems.<br \/>\n\u201cThrough strategic planning, systematic informing of people and raising of awareness have also been promoted, while <strong>new initiatives to care for people dealing with mental health problems will also be launched<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe strategy\u2019s creation had been announced by Damianos\u2019 predecessor Popi Kanari in December, who had said at the time that while \u201cnarrow timeframes\u201d had been given for it to be devised and implemented, the timeframes in question were \u201cfeasible\u201d.<br \/>\nShe said a committee has already been created involving all the relevant stakeholders, and that the creation of the strategy would help to support the sector which, she said, has been \u201ca bit forgotten\u201d historically.<br \/>\nIn addition to the matter of mental health on Thursday, Damianos also extolled the virtues of Gesy, describing it <strong>as the \u201cbiggest reform seen since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus\u201d<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHe also pointed out that Gesy will celebrate the fifth anniversary of its creation on June 1.<br \/>\nIn addition, he pointed out that the European Commission had said last year that more than 99 per cent of Cyprus\u2019 population now have healthcare and that every legal resident in the country has the right to healthcare, regardless of their income or other contributions.<br \/>\nHe added that the commission had said overall service availability has increased, while waiting times have decreased.<br \/>\nHe went on to say, \u201cthe health ministry\u2019s health policy is governed by the fundamental principle that <strong>health as a social good is the state\u2019s responsibility<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOur purpose is to ensure this basic right for everyone, so that everyone can enjoy high levels of health. We understand the rapid developments in technology and the changing needs of the ageing population and recognise the challenges which greatly affect the healthcare sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government&#8217;s current priority is mental health.
