Poland will seek to fill the new position of a European commissioner for defence if such gets created, European Parliament vice-president and former Polish prime minister was quoted as saying on Sunday.
\nAs the European Union seeks to become a bigger player in the defence industry, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged to create a post dedicated to the sector if she wins a second term later this year.
\n\u201cWe are talking about the commissioner in special times, when there is a war going on beyond our eastern border,\u201d PAP news agency quoted Ewa Kopacz as saying while campaigning ahead of the June 6-9 EU assembly elections.
\n\u201cI think that we will strive hard for a defence commissioner who will not only prepare strategies for peacetime, but will also recognise threats,\u201d she said.
\nKopacz did not bring up any names, but Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has been mentioned in the Polish media as a potential candidate.
\n\u201cI undoubtedly know people who have experience in both defence and foreign policy,\u201d she said.
