{"id":11438,"date":"2024-05-11T19:00:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T16:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=11438"},"modified":"2024-05-11T19:00:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T16:00:27","slug":"thanasis-nicolaou-s-murder-proved-the-existence-of-the-deep-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=11438","title":{"rendered":"Thanasis Nicolaou, \u2019s murder \u2018proved the existence of the deep state\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/thanasis-nicolaou-s-murder-proved-the-existence-of-the-deep-state.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The murder of Thanasis Nicolaou \u201cproved the existence of the deep state\u201d<\/strong>, the Green Party said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1795416504\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1379741853\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-7024038456758-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>They said his mother Andriana Nicolaou was \u201cfinally vindicated\u201d by the Limassol district court\u2019s decision on Friday, that he had died by strangulation and not suicide.<br \/>\n\u201cShe stood against the system, against the attorney-general\u2019s office which for years had been telling her that her child committed suicide. It\u2019s a shame that even today, the attorney-general\u2019s office insists on that position,\u201d they said.<br \/>\nThey added, \u201cthis case proves that <strong>the vested interests, the corruption, and the covering up in this place works as normal and is entrenched<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nRegarding next steps, they said \u201cthere is a case for a new criminal investigation into the murder and the search for the killers. There is a question of accountability for those who have wilfully covered this crime up.\u201d<br \/>\nThey added that the attorney-general\u2019s office\u2019s assumption of responsibility is also a point of note.<br \/>\n\u201cThe fact that the attorney-general and his assistant have included the Thanasis Nicolaou case in the indictment against [Auditor-General] Odysseas Michaelides and are <strong>denouncing the Auditor-general\u2019s support group for supporting the demand for justice and an investigation into Thanasis\u2019 murder<\/strong> is no coincidence,\u201d they said.<br \/>\nThey also called for an amendment to Article 113 of Cyprus\u2019 constitution, \u201cto avoid a new conflict between the institutional roles of the Legal Service and the attorney-general.\u201d<br \/>\nMeanwhile, Akel said Friday\u2019s court decision \u201copens the way for the truth to finally shine through and the longstanding struggle of [Thanasis\u2019] family to be vindicated.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe expect that a real investigation will proceed rapidly and that the people who committed the murder will be brought to justice,\u201d they added.<br \/>\nThey also spoke about the institutional dimension of the case, saying \u201cit is clear that the decision <strong>exposes institutions and persons who were involved in the handling of the case<\/strong>, and the responsibilities of all involved must be thoroughly investigated and attributed.\u201d<br \/>\nIn particular, they said, \u201cthe attorney-general\u2019s office is obviously exposed in many ways and the least it must do is give explanations to Cypriot society for its handling and evaluations of the case.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>The truth and the handing down of justice is the minimum debt owed by the Cypriot state<\/strong> to the late Thanasis and also two his mother, who bore and continues to bear the burden of this ordeal,\u201d they said.<br \/>\nJudge Dora Varoshiotou had announced on Friday to a packed courtroom in Limassol that \u201cThanasis Nicolaou, whose body was found under the Alassa bridge, died on September 29, 2005, as a result of strangulation due to criminal activity.\u201d<br \/>\nSpeaking after the ruling, Andriana Nicolaou said, \u201cI thank God for giving me the strength these years through all my sickness,\u201d and promised <strong>that justice would eventually come for those who killed her son<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u201cFor two decades we fought to prove true that everyone did everything to cover up the truth,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nFormer investigator on the case Savvas Matsas had previously said in court the case was filled with lies and that there is an ongoing conspiracy seeking to cover up the case and call it a suicide.<br \/>\nMatsas was removed as investigator from the case by attorney-general George Savvides, who argued it was because he revealed details of his findings to the media. Matsas denied that this was the case.<br \/>\nHe said he had been excluded from the investigation \u201c<strong>because they understood I would not do whatever they want<\/strong>\u201d.<br \/>\nAt the start of the third inquest, last October, the two sides had decided to continue the process from where it had stopped.<br \/>\nThe investigation was therefore carried out on the basis of the new information brought to light following exhumation and examination of Nicolaou\u2019s bones in 2020, which led to the conclusion that his death was due to a criminal act and not a
