{"id":10818,"date":"2024-05-06T16:00:22","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T13:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10818"},"modified":"2024-05-06T16:00:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T13:00:22","slug":"trt-cyprus-journalist-arrested-in-fake-diploma-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10818","title":{"rendered":"TRT Cyprus journalist arrested in fake diploma scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/trt-cyprus-journalist-arrested-in-fake-diploma-scandal.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Sefa Karahasan, the Turkish public broadcaster TRT\u2019s Cyprus correspondent, was <strong>arrested in the north in relation to the ongoing \u201cfake diploma scandal\u201d<\/strong> and appeared in court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-237763788\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1996336208\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6265943347755-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Karahasan\u2019s arrest was related to his doctorate, which he obtained from the now-infamous Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University (KSTU) in Morphou in May last year in the field of business management.<br \/>\nIn court on Tuesday, the police\u2019s representative in court Ali Erdelhun said <strong>Karahasan \u201cwould have graduated in 2025\u201d<\/strong> if the programme had been carried out under normal circumstances.<br \/>\nKarahasan had been employed at the university since 2020, and reportedly told the court that due to this, he \u201ccould have had a degree in my hand within a day\u201d if he wanted to.<br \/>\nAccording to newspaper Yeni Duzen, police officer Ali Erdelhun told the court Karahasan had told the police he had \u201cdone everything together with Serdal Gunduz\u201d, who is currently in prison awaiting a trial as part of the same scandal.<br \/>\nNews website Haber Kibris said Erdelhun had added that <strong>Karahasan\u2019s grade was \u201csuspicious\u201d <\/strong>given that he had \u201creceived the doctorate without attending any classes\u201d.<br \/>\nNewspaper Ozgur Gazete said Karahasan \u201ccould not remember\u201d the subject of his thesis.<br \/>\nKarahasan was remanded in custody for three days, with the police\u2019s investigation into the matter ongoing.<br \/>\nBorn in the Turkish Black Sea city of Giresun, <strong>Karahasan completed his entire higher education at private universities in the north<\/strong>, having graduated from the Near East University with a degree in journalism, and then subsequently from the University of Mediterranean Karpasia with a master\u2019s degree in international relations.<br \/>\nHe worked as a Cyprus correspondent first for Turkish newspaper Milliyet and later for news agency Demiroren, before joining TRT in 2021.<br \/>\nHis arrest comes after Turkey\u2019s higher education council (Yok) announced its intention to prepare a report on the state of the north\u2019s education system in the wake of the \u201cfake diploma scandal\u201d.<br \/>\nThe north\u2019s \u2018education minister\u2019 Nazim Cavusoglu had said during a visit to the island by a delegation from Yok that <strong>he hopes the north can \u201cturn this problem into an advantage\u201d<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe \u201cfake diploma scandal\u201d rocked the north\u2019s education system in the opening months of the year, with multiple high-profile figures having been arrested, and many more being accused of complicity.<br \/>\nRevelations centred on the KSTU, where police found that degrees were being handed out to people within days or in some cases hours of them registering as students.<br \/>\n<strong>Former \u2018education minister\u2019 Kemal Durust was one of the many arrested<\/strong>, having allegedly fraudulently obtained thousands of euros by sending fake invoices to the university in question. His wife, a high-level civil servant, was also arrested, accused of having received a fake diploma.<br \/>\nOther high-profile arrests included Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar\u2019s bodyguard Serif Avcil and former board member of the north\u2019s higher education accreditation authority (Yodak) Mehmet Hasguler.<br \/>\n<strong>Yodak chairman Turgay Avci was also arrested in
