{"id":10498,"date":"2024-05-03T00:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T21:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10498"},"modified":"2024-05-03T00:00:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T21:00:41","slug":"800-kg-meat-seized-ahead-of-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10498","title":{"rendered":"800 kg meat seized ahead of Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/800-kg-meat-seized-ahead-of-easter.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Authorities have seized some 800 kg of meat products from the market ahead of the coming Easter, though not for health reasons, the agriculture minister said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-375870171\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1254153799\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-7252618139199-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Maria Panayiotou told reporters that, as part of routine checks for the Easter holiday, the veterinary services impounded 800 kg of meat from across the entire production chain.<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>This was not for health-related issues, but mostly for labeling issues<\/strong>,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nThe minister explained that the seizures had to do with illegitimate market practices.<br \/>\nOn fruits and vegetables, meanwhile, no issues came up during inspections.<br \/>\nAsked whether there\u2019s a shortage in lamb and kids \u2013 a staple during Easter in Cyprus \u2013 Panayiotou said that there exist adequate supplies in the market.<br \/>\nOn meat prices, and whether they\u2019re higher than last year, the minister said it appears some products have seen a decrease in supermarkets.<br \/>\nShe recalled that, in a bid to ease the high cost of living, the government has implemented zero VAT on meat and vegetables.<br \/>\n\u201cThe most important thing for us [the government] is to ensure that consumers have options,\u201d she offered.<br \/>\nBut speaking to the Cyprus Mail later in the day, the<strong> head of the butchers association said meat prices are definitely up<\/strong> compared to last year.<br \/>\nAccording to Costas Livadiotis, lamb and kid meat is 10 per cent more expensive, while pork is up by about 2 per cent. Meantime chicken prices have actually dropped by about 3 to 4 per cent.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd this is without VAT,\u201d Livadiotis told us. \u201cImagine if we did have VAT.\u201d<br \/>\nAsked about the 800 kg of meat seized, Livadiotis said this probably came from unlicensed farming units.<br \/>\nIn any case, he added, it\u2019s a negligible amount \u2013 <strong>meat consumption during the Easter holiday typically comes to 800,000 kg<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSome 40,000 animals are slaughtered every Easter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities seized 800 kg of meat products from the market ahead of Easter, not for health reasons but mostly for labeling issues.
