{"id":10496,"date":"2024-05-03T00:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T21:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10496"},"modified":"2024-05-03T00:00:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T21:00:30","slug":"european-court-backs-italy-in-greek-statue-dispute-with-getty-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10496","title":{"rendered":"European court backs Italy in Greek statue dispute with Getty Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/european-court-backs-italy-in-greek-statue-dispute-with-getty-museum.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday ruled in favour of Italy\u2019s long-standing demand that the Getty Villa Museum in the United States return an ancient Greek statue which Rome claims was smuggled out of the country decades ago.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-561211489\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1876695292\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6744905809895-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The bronze, life-size statue known as the \u201cVictorious Youth\u201d is of a naked young man crowning himself with a wreath. It was made by Greek sculptor Lysippos between 300 and 100 BC and discovered in 1964 by a fisherman in the Adriatic Sea, off the central Italian town of Pedaso.<br \/>\nIn its decision, the ECHR said a 2019 confiscation order issued by Italy\u2019s highest court, aimed at recovering the piece, was reasonable and \u201cproportionate to the aim of ensuring the return of an object that was part of Italy\u2019s cultural heritage\u201d.<br \/>\nAfter being sold several times\u00a0after its discovery, it was bought in 1977 in Munich by the Getty Trust for $3.95 million. It is now on display at the Getty Villa Museum, in Malibu, California, which showcases Greek and Roman antiquities.<br \/>\nItaly always believed it was smuggled out of the country and acquired illegally and has made several attempts to recover the statue, including through international police authorities and diplomacy.<br \/>\nECHR said Italian authorities had demonstrated that the statue was part of the country\u2019s cultural heritage and that the Getty Trust \u201chad disregarded the requirements of the law, at the very least negligently, or perhaps in bad faith\u201d by buying the piece without proof of its legitimate provenance.<br \/>\nHowever, the ruling is not binding on the United States, which is not party to the European Convention of Human rights which the ECHR polices.<br \/>\nThe Getty Villa Museum will consider requesting a review before the ECHR, a statement emailed to Reuters said, adding that it would \u201ccontinue to defend its possession of the statue in all relevant courts.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGetty\u2019s nearly fifty-year public possession of an artwork that was neither created by an Italian artist nor found within the Italian territory\u201d complies with American and international law, it said.<br \/>\nThe ECHR\u2019s decision can be appealed by both sides within the next three months, though only a small proportion of cases are accepted.<br \/>\nRome\u2019s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said\u00a0the European Court had \u201cunequivocally recognised the rights of the Italian state.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added\u00a0in a statement\u00a0that Italy had interrupted\u00a0relations\u00a0with cultural\u00a0bodies\u00a0that did not respect confiscation orders and since becoming minister in October 2022, \u201chundreds\u201d of pieces had been recouped from the United States and 750 from Britain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of Italy&#8217;s demand for the return of the &#8220;Victorious Youth&#8221; statue from the Getty Villa Museum in the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":10497,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"Default","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[8728,1915,4182,8575,195,8190,3385,932,2029,303,3,4893,398,7017,1840,7494,386,8727,250,3330,115,187,4604,419,5679,1394,875,3331,5328,184,1853,3522,6790,1812,4388,3260,7967,1827,1681,544,5447],"class_list":["post-10496","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-other","tag-ancient-greek-statue","tag-artist","tag-artwork","tag-authorities","tag-britain","tag-bronze","tag-california","tag-court","tag-cultural-heritage","tag-culture","tag-cyprus","tag-demand","tag-diplomacy","tag-dispute","tag-european-court","tag-european-court-of-human-rights","tag-fisherman","tag-getty-villa-museum","tag-google","tag-google-news","tag-human-rights","tag-international","tag-international-law","tag-italy","tag-law","tag-man","tag-museum","tag-news","tag-party","tag-police","tag-possession","tag-relations","tag-respect","tag-rights","tag-rome","tag-sea","tag-state","tag-statement","tag-trust","tag-united-states","tag-youth"],"acf":{"keyphrase":"","keywords":"","sourceimg":"","country-category":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>European court backs Italy in Greek statue dispute with Getty Museum<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"statue.
