{"id":10184,"date":"2024-04-30T15:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T12:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10184"},"modified":"2024-04-30T15:00:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T12:00:32","slug":"christodoulides-tried-to-prevent-case-against-auditor-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=10184","title":{"rendered":"Christodoulides , \u2018tried to prevent\u2019 case against auditor-general"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/christodoulides-tried-to-prevent-case-against-auditor-general.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>President <strong>Nikos Christodoulides had attempted to make \u201cfirefighting moves\u201d<\/strong> to prevent a case being filed for the removal of Auditor-General Odysseas Michaelides, he said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-263654136\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1774747932\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-8766691954001-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking after a cabinet meeting, he said \u201cyes, I made moves because it was not a positive development. I made efforts, but to no avail. I have nothing else to add.\u201d<br \/>\nChristodoulides\u2019 behind-the-scenes intervention on the matter is a gear-change compared to his stance hitherto.<br \/>\nPreviously, he had gone as far as to describe the situation as an \u201cunfortunate and unpleasant development\u201d but made it very clear that \u201c<strong>I am not getting myself involved in any circumstances<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nOn Saturday, he had said that \u201cany decision the courts make will be fully respected by me. I have nothing else to say on this matter.\u201d<br \/>\nHowever, he had reaffirmed his displeasure at the unfolding situation later on Saturday, saying, \u201cif this conflict could have been avoided, it would have been a better development for me.\u201d<br \/>\nHe had received criticism for his neutral stance on the matter from some quarters, including from Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou. He had said on Saturday that <strong>Christodoulides\u2019 stance on the matter was \u201cextremely worrying and dangerous\u201d<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHe added that Christodoulides was attempting to act as a \u201cshrewd neutral\u201d and was treating the matter with \u201capathy\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cThe president\u2019s attitude shows that either he does not understand what this development really means, or, he is letting things develop with his silence, and it is his own will for things to be this way,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nStefanou himself had come down on the side of the auditor-general, saying that \u201cwhile the auditor-general may have exceeded his powers in some cases, that does not mean he should be taken to court to request that he be sacked.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added that the legal service \u201cdo not have a good case\u201d.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, <strong>Odysseas Michaelides has been given until May 17 to object <\/strong>to the case brought to the Supreme Constitutional Court to have him removed from his role.<br \/>\nBy law, he is allowed a maximum of 21 days after the date on which the case was filed, April 26, to file an objection. The objection would not be examined separately from the initial case by the court but would instead be taken into account during the case for his dismissal.<br \/>\nMichaelides said on Saturday that he would file an objection to the case and that he had no further comment to add as \u201cthe judiciary will now have its say\u201d.<br \/>\nOn Tuesday, newspaper Phileleftheros reported that <strong>Michaelides\u2019 legal team will not contest that attorney-general George Savvides has no right<\/strong> to apply to have him relieved of his duty, but that such a case will be made later during legal proceedings.<br \/>\nThey added that Savvides had looked to cover his bases when filing the case to remove Michaelides, claiming that in his filing of the case, it had been written that he \u201cis, by virtue of his position and the powers granted to him by the constitution, the pre-eminent defender of legality.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was reportedly added that Savvides has \u201cthe discretionary power in the public interest to <strong>initiate proceedings against any person in the Republic<\/strong> and is therefore legitimised and has a legal interest to file an application for the dismissal of the auditor-general due to misconduct\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Nikos Christodoulides attempted to prevent a case being filed for the removal of Auditor-General Odysseas Michaelides, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
