At least 14 people died off the coast of Morocco when the boat they were on capsized while trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands.
About 58 people were on board the boat, Spanish non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras said. The survivors were located while being held by the dinghy.
The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, have seen a sharp increase in boat arrivals carrying irregular migrants since early October. Spain's interior ministry recorded an 80% year-on-year increase in the number of arrivals to the Canary Islands between January 1 and October 15.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that more than 38,000 migrants from Africa have arrived in the Canary Islands this year. Caminando Fronteras highlighted that at least 778 migrants died in the first six months of 2023, trying to make this dangerous crossing.
