Elam and former police chief linked to monastery scandal

The ecclesiastical court’s investigation into the recent scandals involving cash, sex, and a miracles’ scam at the Osios Avakoum monastery is to begin on Wednesday amid breaking allegations that an ex police chief and the president of far-right party Elam had been present at events.

According to information published in Reporter, Elam head Christos Christou and ex police chief Kypros Michaelides were present at the Tamasos bishopric on March 5, the day the safe box containing €800,000 was seized and on which monks embroiled in the scandal have alleged kidnapping.Michaelides was reported to have been present at the nearby bishopric – though not at the monastery – as a member of the church committee and is expected to testify as a witness for Bishop Isaias. His presence was confirmed to the news outlet by Elam’s Christou, who in his statements said that he had taken the role of observer and was there in his capacity as throne commissioner of the bishopric and not in his capacity as president of Elam.Christou said he had been at the bishopric as he is originally from Tamasos, saying he had arrived late to the proceedings and was acting as a witness without any other involvement.“As an observer, I have an opinion and I will make a statement, as needed,” he told Reporter.Reports which surfaced that two members of the police had been present during the events on March 5 were confirmed by police, saying it was for security purposes.Follow the
