The Cypriot Ministry of Defense and the National Guard have started a probe into the circumstances surrounding the injury of a 23-year-old Greek soldier in Cyprus.
In an announcement on Friday, the Ministry of Defence said that it has been supporting the injured member of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) who was harmed by a grenade, along with his family, providing them with all possible psychological support and assistance concerning their stay in Cyprus.
“All necessary actions were taken, in accordance with the procedures, to immediately transport the injured soldier to a hospital and to ensure he receives the best possible medical and pharmaceutical care and attention,” the announcement said.
“From the very first moment, a thorough investigation has been underway to explore the circumstances and causes that led to the soldier’s injury,” it is noted further.
The Ministry of Defence and the National Guard are focusing on maintaining medical confidentiality and avoiding actions and statements that could worsen the emotional state of the injured, their families, their colleagues, and the National Guard personnel as a whole, they said.
Any additional statements could potentially affect the investigative process and lead to premature and possibly arbitrary conclusions, the statement concludes.
The soldier was subjected to amputation of his right hand following an injury from a grenade explosion during army training in the area of Agios Modestos, near Stavrovouni.
