Speaking at the Plenary Session of the Central Committee, which met today, with the subject of the upcoming European elections – a major and essential political battle for the Left, as the Secretary General said – Stefanos Stefanou expressed the certainty that the ballot presented by the party will consist "of people capable and serious, honest and ready to work and fight for visions, values and policies that the people need' and will include 'three men and three women', underlining the importance of gender equality.

He also noted that the aim of the ballot is to "combine political executives of AKEL with personalities from the progressive area of Cyprus" and "it will continue the historic step we took in 2019 with the inclusion of Turkish Cypriots in it".

For AKEL, the presence in the European Parliament is, apart from everything else, a call to action for our homeland and its struggle to shake off the occupation and together E/K and T/K to co-manage the common, bi-communal Cypriot state, said Mr. Stefanou.

The real needs of the people and workers in Cyprus and in Europe require strengthening the strength and struggles of the Left. AKEL and the other forces of the Left are going to the European elections putting forward the demands for which we fight every day inside and outside the European Parliament:

  • active policies to address low wages and labor deregulation;
  • promotion of collective labor agreements,
  • measures to deal with the accuracy and increase of interest rates,
  • modern and bold social measures to support working parents,
  • housing policies and electricity costs affecting households, workers, pensioners and small businesses across Europe.
  • Measures such as the taxation of the excess profits of banks and energy companies are only some of what we are demanding in Cyprus and in Europe, in order to finance the support of households and workers. In order to promote these, it is necessary to strengthen the assertive voices within the European Parliament, to increase the number of MEPs of the Left who fight militantly for the dignity and rights of the world of work. The dignity and rights of European societies.

Political battle

The European elections, Mr. Stefanou said, are "a big and essential political battle for the Left", and his party's aim is "to have a serious and essential discussion about the small and big issues that concern Europe and are discussed in the European Parliament". .

"The states and peoples of the European Union are paying the economic consequences of the wars which are added to everything left behind by the pandemic and the global capitalist crisis of the past decade," said Mr. Stefanou, stating that "the real needs of the people and workers in Cyprus but also in Europe require strengthening the strength and struggles of the Left".

AKEL, he said, criticizes the character of the EU, for "its anti-popular policies, bureaucracy and closed structures that cut off from society and without accountability and control impose policies that primarily serve the ruling elites", but separated this criticism from "the euroscepticism of the extreme right, which is a reactionary and regressive ideology".
