Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $83.3 million in damages after being found guilty by a New York jury in the defamation case against columnist E. Jean Carroll.
The 80-year-old columnist and author filed a lawsuit against the former US president claiming he tarnished her name by denying in 2019 that he had raped her nearly three decades ago.
The court ruled that Trump should pay Carroll a total of $83.3 million. She is ordered to pay $11 million to fund her campaign to restore her reputation, $7.3 million for emotional harm caused by the public statements and $65 million in restitution.
Trump called it "absolutely ridiculous" on his Truth Social social media account and said he would appeal.
"I strongly disagree with both verdicts and will appeal the entire Biden-directed Witch Hunt directed at me and the Republican Party," the former president wrote.
According to the BBC, Carroll and her legal team were all smiles as they left court. However, they did not respond to reporters' questions immediately after the court's announcement.
Nearly a year ago, another jury awarded the former columnist $5 million in damages, ruling that Trump sexually assaulted her inside a Bergdorf Goodman department store and defamed her in 2022, when she denied it happened.
