The United Nations announced yesterday the appointment of Holguin as Guterres' personal envoy on the Cyprus issue
Antonio Guterres' appointment of Maria Angela Holguin Quellar as his personal envoy to Cyprus was welcomed by London through Europe Minister Leo Doherty.
In a post on "X", Mr Doherty wrote: “The appointment of Ms Holguin as the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus is an important step and we welcome the agreement of both leaders to work with her. The UK will support her to find common ground between the sides and ensure a just and lasting solution."

More important than ever today, due to the geopolitical situation, is security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, "where common interests and opportunities can promote cooperation and common approaches", say in a joint statement on behalf of the EU the High Representative Josep Borrell and Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, welcoming the appointment of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, as the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus.
"This appointment is crucial in providing critical support in the search for common ground, with the aim of returning to formal negotiations for a lasting settlement in Cyprus, a process that has not progressed since the talks held in Crans Montana in 2017" , they mention.
The EU, they emphasize, "remains fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, within the framework of the United Nations, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and in accordance with the principles on which the EU and the (Community) acquired".
"The EU stands ready to play an active role in supporting all stages of the UN-mediated process, with all appropriate means at its disposal," they added.
As they underline, "in today's geopolitical context, it is more important than ever for security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, where common interests and opportunities can promote cooperation and common approaches."
