The President of the European Council Charles Michel will be a candidate in the European elections – What will happen if he is elected

The president of the European Council, Charles Michel , will run for a seat in the European Parliament in June and if elected will leave his post in mid-July, he said in an interview published today in the newspaper De Standaard.

"I have decided to stand as a candidate in the 2024 European elections," Mr Michel explained to the newspaper. "If elected, I will take my seat. The European Council can (…) name a successor at the end of June, beginning of July".

Mr Michel, a former prime minister of Belgium, took over the presidency of the European Council, which includes the leaders of the 27 EU member states, at the end of 2019.

He will head the ballot of his centre-right Movement Réformateur party, De Standaard reported.
